What could be more frustrating than getting a puncture just a few days after you’ve purchased your tyre? It’s even more infuriating when it’s the busy time of the week and all your important business meetings are scheduled on the same day! However, there’s good news for you! A punctured tyre can be repaired, but there are several instances where this dilemma cannot be fixed.
Position
The punctured tyre can be repaired only at the minor repair area, if the puncture is found beyond this area, it would be too risky to carry out a repair as it would be too close to the sidewall. The sidewall should never be touched when doing the repairs. Why? This is because the sidewall is the part of the tyre that supports most of the load when the tyre is being used.
Size
It doesn’t always mean that a punctured tyre can be repaired just because the damage did not go beyond the minor repair area. Chances of repair also depend on the size of the damaged area. A puncture causing larger than a 6mm diameter would mean that the tyre cannot be repaired, following the British standard (BSAU159).
Run-flat
Run-flat tyres cannot be repaired, this is due to the structure of the tyre. Run-flat tyres are capable of still driving even with a puncture for a short distance allowing you to get to your nearest tyre fitter or to a point of safety.
Tyre condition
It’s important to check the condition of the tyre before driving not just to be safe but also, if not avoid then, prevent any more frequent encounters of other tyre problems. Tyre maintenance is an important part of keeping your car functioning and road worthy. It is a legal requirement to have a tread of at least 1.6mm across the central 3/4 of the tyre – your vehicle will not pass its MOT with below this amount.
Look for tyre wear and tread: the location of excessive wear and tear on a tyre often tells you whether your tyres are under/over inflated, if the alignment of the wheels are correct or if the tyre has been damaged/reached the end of its life.
